The Sooners assembled on the second floor of the late, great Jefferson House, for their customary Sunday night meeting.

Six days later, Nov. 14, , OU would play Army, and Bud Wilkinson had commissioned his newest assistant coach to provide the scouting report on the Black Knights.

Almost 60 years later, Jerry Pettibone remembers how moved Bob Blaik was to discuss Army football.

“He stood up and started talking about what it meant to play at West Point, and he really got emotional,” said Pettibone, then a Sooner sophomore.

Blaik talked about the Army tradition and the quality of football played by the Cadets.

Blaik knew the subject well. His father was Red Blaik, the legendary Army coach who had just retired after the season, having coached the Cadets to some of the greatest football America has ever seen.

But otherwise, Bob Blaik didn't talk much about Army.
